We don’t know about you, but we’ve just about had our fill of snow, pine trees, and all of the traditional holiday accoutrements by the time December 25th rolls around. Give us a private jet charter to a tropical island any day of the week.

Forget the eggnog. We’d much rather set up a reclining chair and sip on Mai Tais. We’ll pick up a few Christmas ornaments just to keep in the holiday spirit, but we’d rather hang them between the coconuts than between the pine cones.

Don’t get us wrong: there’s nothing wrong with a traditional Christmas. We just think that every once in a while it’s important to break out of the old rut and do something different. And regardless of where you want to go, if you plan on taking a private jet charter, it’s much better to book your flight in advance. While charter jets are available just about any time on short notice, you’ll get a much better price by booking now.

So where would you like to go for Christmas? Here’s some of the places we’re considering:

Hawaii. Whether you go to the big island or one of the smaller ones, Hawaii is always a great choice for a getaway.

Jamaica. You haven’t heard Christmas carols until you’ve heard them on played by a steel drum band on the beach. Honestly, it’s a little odd at first, but in a completely good (and tropical) way.

The Bahamas. If you’ve never been, you really should go. If you’ve already been, you already know why.

Cancun. Mexico has some of the most colorful Christmas celebrations in the world, and there’s no better place to experience Mexico than Cancun.

It really doesn’t matter where you go, but do yourself a favor and go someplace other than Grandma’s this year. Take a private charter jet, get yourselves someplace tropical and kick back and enjoy the holiday season away from all the hustle and bustle of back home.

If you’re not prepared to deal with the fact that we live and do business in a global marketplace, you might just as well get fitted out for a blue collar and find your spot on the assembly line. If you can find a spot on the assembly line, that is. These days, e-mail, Internet marketing, and teleconferencing are the order of the day. Still, there are times when we find ourselves facing the need to conduct business face to face, regardless of how global our business has become. And when you do, the best way to get there is via private jet charter.

Traveling by private jet charter offers several advantages when doing business internationally, including:

Speed. Sometimes time is money. Getting there first can make the difference between putting the deal to bed and putting it on ice. Using a private jet means that you are not on the major airlines’ schedule.

Prestige. Let’s face it; there are certain parts of the world where it matters more than others. In some countries, arriving in a private jet lends you an appearance of prosperity which causes people to take you more seriously.

Comfort. Business doesn’t stop just because you’re in the air. Flying on a private jet is more conducive to your comfort, which is especially important if you are transacting business while you are en route.

Of course, there are any number of things which are more important than how you arrive in another country. The most important thing for any international businessperson to remember is that other countries have cultures which are often very different from our own.

When doing business overseas, you can really give yourself a leg up by learning a little bit about the target country’s business culture. Simple things like knowing how they shake hands there (yes, it is different from one country to the next) to gift giving etiquette really make a difference in many business transactions.

In some cultures, it is important to know when to speak (and when not to). Speaking out of turn has blown many business deals, especially when dealing with Asian cultures.

Make it a point to learn at least the rudiments of the language of any country you will be doing business in. Don’t get us wrong, no one expects you to be fluent in Danish just because you have minor business dealings in Denmark. However, it says volumes about you if you at least put forth the effort to learn how to say hello, good bye, and thank you.

Remember that, in the end, all business is face to face. Even if your only contact is through e mail, you will improve your bottom line in international business if you make it your business to learn a little about the culture of those you have dealings with.

Anyone who has ever done any flying on a private jet can list off dozens of reasons why it’s the best way to fly, hands down. But if you’ve never flown on a private jet charter before, you probably don’t realize that the best things about flying on a private plane are not things, so to speak. The best part about flying on a private jet is not so much what you get (though there are some pretty cool perks) but rather what you miss.

Think back to the last time you flew on one of the major airlines. Hopefully you were at least flying first class. Even if you were, though, you no doubt had to contend with some or all of these things:

Noise. We’re not talking about the noise of the plane itself-that’s unavoidable. We’re talking about the noise of other people talking about things you really don’t care to listen to. You can buy noise canceling headphones, of course, but why should you have to?

Kids. Don’t get us wrong; we love kids. Just not on an airplane. While it’s less common to have noisy, problem kids in first class, there’s still no guarantee that you won’t have to listen to a fussy baby.

Crowding. Have you ever had the guy next to you decide to fall asleep? Did you notice that when other passengers do that, they can never seem to stay in their own chair? Again, first class gives you a little room to spread out, but nothing like the space on a private jet charter.

Airline food. Let’s face it, most of the major airlines serve stuff that you wouldn’t feed to your dog (because he wouldn’t eat it either). Trust us on this one, if you have a flight long enough that you need a meal, you will be treated much better on a private jet.

Long waits. You’ll find that the entire process, from passing through security to take off, is generally much better streamlined for you if you are taking a private jet charter.

If you add in all of the extra benefits of flying on a private plane, you’re sure to agree that it’s the best way to get where you’re going. But as we said, the best parts about flying on a private jet charter are the things you miss.

If your private jet charter doesn’t include a wide variety of in flight movie choices, they should. As a matter of fact, you should insist on it. While the price of flying on a private jet is much less than what it has been in the past, especially as compared to other forms of air travel, you still pay enough that you should expect entertainment as part of the service.

If you’re flying on a private jet charter, why not consider watching a movie involving jet airplanes? While everyone has different one that they like more than others, here are seven of our favorite movies involving jets.

Top Gun. This is arguably the best movie of any genre to come out of the ‘80s. It instantly transformed the military from something to be avoided if possible to something pretty cool to be involved in. The aerial combat footage is awesome, and Kelly McGillis is smokin’ hot as well. Is it wrong that the fact she swung the other way only serves to make her hotter?

Airplane. And Airplane II, for that matter. The basic idea of this farce is that half of the passengers and most of the crew (including the pilot and copilot) get deathly ill from eating tainted airline food and the plane needs to be landed by a former military pilot who hasn’t flown in years. While it probably won’t inspire you to want to eat the airline’s food, it’s good for a few laughs during the flight.

Transformers. Most of the evil “robots in disguise” are jet fighters of one sort or another. If you’re in the mood to see some of your favorite childhood toys blow the crap out of each other and half of the planet, this would be an excellent in flight choice. Spoiler: the really cool jets lose to a lame-o oversized Tonka truck.

Jet Pilot. One of the Duke’s lesser known films, this one is from 1957, making it the oldest on our list. The movie stars John Wayne as a jet fighter pilot in the fledgling Air Force opposite Janet Leigh as a Soviet defector.

Snakes on a Plane. Hopefully, there won’t be any snakes on your private jet charter except on the movie screen. This one’s a bit corny, but worth watching if you want a funny and mildly scary flick.

Iron Eagle. This one was released the same year as Top Gun. It isn’t quite as good, but if you have a long flight, you could watch its three sequels along with it.

An Officer and a Gentleman. This one doesn’t exactly showcase jets, but somewhere underneath the romantic drama, there is a good deal of competition amongst the main characters for the privilege of flying Navy jet fighters.

When George W. Bush was inaugurated in 2000, the Washington D.C. airports service almost 300 private jets. Some of them were from a private jet charter service, while others were owned outright. But in any case, that’s a lot of private jets in one place at one time.

To be sure, there was an outcry amongst environmentalists and others who oppose private jets (and private automobiles, in some cases). So, you might be tempted to think that there would be a much smaller showing during the 2008 Presidential election, given the fact that much of that party’s base is heavily rooted in green politics.

You might think so, but you’d be wrong. Very wrong. President Barack Obama’s inauguration festivities saw record numbers fly in using a private jet charter or personally owned jet airplane. Almost 500 private jets flew into local airports.

Of course we have no gripes about private jets. We’re all for them. We also have no axe to grind with the election results. We’re equal opportunity when it comes to harassing politicians. We simply found it humorous. We’re really looking forward to the day when the Green Party manages to get Ralph Nader elected and the private jet count tops 1,000.

All political joking aside, private jets will continue to play an important role in business and political travel. And as they become more and more affordable, we’re going to see more people traveling this way. What was once highly exclusive has now become well within the reach of even modestly successful businessmen.

Using a private jet charter system, more and more people are able to buy time on or a share of a private jet. These days, the cost is often only slightly higher than double the cost of first class airfare. For those who frequently have the need to travel and for whom business or political deals can hinge on how quickly they can get to the negotiating table, it only makes sense to use a private jet.

So, how many jets will show up at the next Presidential inauguration? It’s hard to say, though it probably won’t matter much which political party wins. Unless of course, it’s the Green Party, in which case we’re looking for record numbers.

Perhaps the idea is long overdue. Manufacturers and retailers of luxury goods have been finding it increasingly difficult to reach potential customers due to the decline of print media, such as newspapers and magazines. Enter Private Shoppes, LLC, a Birmingham-based direct marketing firm. They have developed the first-ever catalog and online direct marketing site exclusively targeting customers of private jet charters.

Business executives, world-class athletes, Hollywood celebrities, foreign dignitaries, and the like are the intended audience for this customized catalog and associated website. With departments like Premium Cigars, Upscale Gift Baskets, Luxury Health and Wellness, and Designer Luggage, Private Shoppes is clearly designed to appeal to the upscale private jet charter customer.

The catalog hopes to reach some of the most affluent – and most elusive – consumers on the planet. Although information about the company is limited, and we have no word yet on when the catalog will actually appear on private jet charter flights, in general aviation airports, or fixed base operators, its website claims to have “the only luxury e-commerce site and in-flight catalog developed for the corporate and general aviation flyer.”

The result of a joint collaboration between David Bannister, former publisher of Stratos Magazine and Deedee Morrison, founder of the now-defunct Private Air Magazine, the new direct marketing tool is likely to hit its mark. With so many years of experience publishing magazines to the same target audience, Morrison and Bannister should have no trouble getting their catalog in front of the elite consumers they’re after.

“Our ultimate goal at Private Shoppes, after all, is to free up the time that you would ordinarily spend bouncing from store to website so you can spend more of it with friends and loved-ones exploring the passions that make the private flying lifestyle so worthwhile,” the company website announces.

Private Shoppes professes to have compiled for its readers their “own little Amazon, with wings.”

While the idea is that jet-setters and corporate VIPs need online and catalog shopping venues for added convenience, the jury’s still out on whether the venture will be successful or not. After all, we’re talking about people with nearly unlimited resources, plenty of staff and assistants, not to mention personal shoppers, any of whom could probably take care of the boss’s vital shopping needs. Outside of the most tedious of shopping errands, most affluent consumers would most likely be prone to do their shopping in person rather than online or by mail-order catalog.

When you’re shopping around for the best deals on private jet charter flights, it’s best to use a charter broker or online marketplace and compare quotes. If you’re new to the game, however, it can be difficult to decode all the various charges and compare apples to apples. We’ll walk you through the assorted fees and surcharges so you can determine which private jet charter quote best matches your needs.

Be Aware of Hidden Fees

First, you should never assume that your private jet charter quote is comprehensive. To prepare yourself, you should learn the terminology, know what kinds of fees are typically assessed, and then ask about any charges that aren’t listed on the quote. If you don’t ask up front, the hidden charges could sting you later when the bill arrives.

Airtime Billing Methods

There are two different ways to charge for airtime. Your quote will either be based on flight time or block time. Flight time includes only the time when you’re actually in the air, but block time includes time spent on the runway at both ends of the trip. You could get a higher hourly rate from an operator that charges for flight time only, but end up paying less than you would for a lower block time quote because of the additional taxi time that would be included.

Additional Fees, Taxes, and Surcharges

Your private jet charter quote may include some or all of the following. If one or more of these items is not listed on your quote, ask the broker or operator if the quote is inclusive of these charges. If they’re not included, be sure you get an estimate of these fees.

Positioning Costs – If the aircraft has to be flown in from another location to your originating airport, you could be charged a fee. To avoid these costs, try starting your trip from the aircraft’s home base.

Landing Charges – This charge varies by size and type of aircraft, but could range from $100 – $500 per landing.

Taxes – Local, state, and federal taxes may apply. If they’re not listed, be sure to ask.

Fuel Surcharges – Depending on the cost of fuel, you may be charged a fee. Usually fuel is included up to a certain rate per gallon. Your broker or operator should be able to tell you if you will be responsible for this expense.

Minimum Daily Usage Charges – If you are staying several nights, you could be charged for flight hours even when you’re not using the aircraft. Typically this fee is around two hours per day, but be sure to ask.

Flight Attendants – On longer flights or with certain aircraft, flight attendants may be necessary. This service typically costs around $500 per flight. Ask your broker or operator if you should expect to have a flight attendant, and whether the cost is included in the quote.

There are federal regulations that govern safety rules for business aviation, but there are also private and industry-led safety standards you should be aware of when choosing a charter operator.

FAA Charter Certification

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) conducts a lengthy analysis of private jet charter operators before they become certified. The certification process required to grant an aircraft and its operator the right to carry the general public as paying passengers is both painstaking and exhaustive. It takes many months, sometimes even years, to become an FAA-certified Air Carrier.

As a customer, you should always require that your private jet charter operator and aircraft are FAA-certified. There are no exceptions to this rule. If you are unsure whether your operator and/or aircraft are certified, it’s completely appropriate to ask them to produce proof for your records. You can also do your own checking on the aircraft and charter operator at the FAA’s website.

IS-BAO

The International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO) is the newest and most comprehensive safety standard for private jets. Only a small number of charter operators have achieved IS-BAO registration to date. These operators have demonstrated the upmost in safety compliance through successful completion of an audit by an International Business Aviation Council (IBAC) accredited auditor.

IS-BAO is a comprehensive safety program developed by the industry, for the industry. It’s separate from for-profit third party entities that rate charter operators based on their own criteria.

Wyvern

Wyvern LTD is an independent business that makes its money by analyzing and approving private jet charter operators. It evaluates applicants based on their known flight history, internal documentation and safety practices. Wyvern provides comprehensive charter operator information, including history, background, pilot information, FAA documents, and insurance coverage. They also warn of any accidents, incidents, FAA Letters of Correction and Warning Notices related to the charter operator.

Wyvern-approved flights have a safety record that is completely unblemished. Of all the 1,177 fatalities from January 1991 through April 2009, not one involved a Wyvern-recommended aircraft or aircrew.

ARG/US

Aviation Research Group/US (ARG/US) provides business aviation consulting services, and also collects and distributes information and research. One of the services they offer is charter operator reviews and ratings. Charter operators can subscribe to ARG/US’s services and obtain a rating of Gold, Gold Plus or Platinum, at increasing subscription rates and audit intensity. Private jet charter customers may also then subscribe to ARG/US and access those ratings and pertinent operator information.

Of the 2,150 currently registered charter operators in the US, however, only 335 have chosen to subscribe to ARG/US’s safety ratings service. Many charter operators decided to drop their ARG/US rating in 2009 when the group began charging an ongoing fee for each rating level.
